Cohort 2 Profiles

College of Engineering

Oluwadurotimi Aboderin will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science and a minor in Japanese in December 2018. Tim is completing research using statistical analysis of social media data under the supervision of Dr. Ben Hanrahan. During his participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Tim completed a summer internship experience at Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation. He was also a member of Penn State Nittany Data Labs.

Nmachi Anumba will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. Nmachi’s thesis, titled The Feasibility of Immune Cell Assisted Drug Delivery, was prepared under the supervision of Dr. Cheng Dong. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Nmachi completed summer research experiences at Penn State and The University of California, Berkeley. She was also a member of The Penn State International Dance Ensemble, represented the College of Engineering as a Global Engineering Fellow, and spent the spring semester of her sophomore year studying abroad in Ecuador.

Grace Noel will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Grace completed research on colloidal silica nanocrystals under the supervision of Dr. Tom Mallouk. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Grace completed summer research experiences at Penn State, the University of Texas at Austin, and MIT.  She was also a member of the OPP THON committee and Engineering Ambassadors, as well as the coordinator for the Women in Engineering Program Facilitated Study Groups and the THON Chair for our Millennium Society.

Caroline Van Pelt will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science with a minor in Natural Science in December 2018. Caroline is completing research on an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based corrosion sensor for use in difficult-to-access areas of U.S. Navy ships under the supervision of Dr. Barbara Shaw. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Caroline will have completed summer research experiences at Carderock Naval Surface Warfare Center, Pin Oak Lane Farm and Veterinary Clinic, the Penn State Corrosion Engineering Laboratory, and the Williams Companies. She was also a member of the Penn State Equine Research Team.

Eberly College of Science

Tiffany Bamfo will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with the neuroscience option and a minor in Psychology. She is completing her thesis research on retroviruses under the supervision of Dr. Mike Summers.  During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program, Tiffany completed summer research experiences at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County and Penn State University. She was also a member of the Student National Medical Association and the African Student Association.

Stephanie Brown will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics with a minor in Physics. Stephanie completed research simulating thermodynamic properties of antihydrogen for an antimatter experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) under the supervision of Dr. Miguel Mostafa. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program, Stephanie completed summer research experiences at CERN and The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover, Germany.  She was also a member of oSTEM (Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honors Society.

Connor Cassady will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Connor’s research thesis investigated the Riemann hypothesis for elliptic curves over finite fields under the supervision of Dr. Mihran Papikian. During his participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Connor participated in Mathematics Advanced Study Semesters, a highly selective program that prepares students for graduate study in mathematics. Connor completed summer research experiences at Penn State while assisting with the summer bridge math program. He was also a member of the Penn State Blue Band and the Second Floor Stand-Up Comedy Club.

Patricia De Tomas Medina will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science with a Biological Sciences and Health Professions option. Patty completed research creating a computational model for neuronal deformation under the supervision of Dr. Reuben Kraft. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Patty completed summer research experiences at The United States Army Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, The University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Penn State University. She was also a member of the Penn State Lionettes Dance Team and a volunteer for the Penn State Dance MaraTHON (THON).

Alexandra Nader will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. Alex completed research addressing selenium-dependent down regulation of soluble epoxide hydrolase in inflamed murine bone-derived macrophages under the supervision of Dr. Sandeep Prabhu. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Alex completed summer research experiences at Vanderbilt University, Rutgers University, and Penn State University. She was also a member of Club Field Hockey, Science LionPride, Vaccinate America and Global Medical Brigades

Emma Price will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Neuroscience. Emma completed research investigating cell wall uptake, trafficking, and organization in Arabidopsis thaliana using a metabolically incorporated click reporter under the supervision of Dr. Charles Anderson. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program, Emma completed summer research experiences at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She was also a member of Global Medical Brigades and a THON Donor and Alumni Relations Captain.

Gabrielle Swain will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Gabby completed research on the response of Cassiopea xamachana infected with two different symbiont types to temperature under the supervision of Dr. Monica Medina. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Gabby completed summer research experiences at Penn State, Clemson and Temple.  During fall of junior year she completed a study abroad in Italy. She was also a member of Club Gymnastics and NAACP.

Olivia Vilella will be graduating with Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and minors in Spanish and Math. Olivia’s thesis, titled Volitional Behavior, was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Drew. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program Olivia completed summer research experiences at the Penn State Material Science REU, and The Repperger Summer Internship at Fort Sam Houston Joint Base. She was also a member of the Society of Physics Students and Millennium Peer Tutoring, and will be the lead Program Assistant for our Summer Bridge Program this summer.

Inger Wang will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics with a minor in Biology.  Inger will complete her research thesis titled Clustering Validation under the supervision of Dr. Lynn Lin. During her participation in the Millennium Scholars Program, Inger completed summer research experiences at North Carolina State University, Duke University, University of California, Riverside, and Penn State. She was also a member of Penn State Statistics Club, Oriana Singers, and THON Donor & Alumni Relations and OPPerations committees.

 

Sneha Yennawar will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a minor in Neuroscience. Sneha completed research on wing development of Drosophila under the supervision of Dr. Santhosh Girirajan. Sneha completed summer research experiences at Penn State. She was also a member of Global Medical Brigades and Infusion.
